Current Event #7 "Venice floods: Climate change behind highest tide in 50 years, says mayor"

Venice floods: Climate change behind highest tide in 50 years, says mayor Due to the severe flooding in Venice that has left much of the Italian city underwater is a direct result of climate change, the mayor says. The highest water levels in the region in more than 50 years would leave "a permanent mark", Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro tweeted. "These are the effects of climate change the costs will be high," he said. The waters in Venice peaked at 1.87 meters, according to the tide monitoring center. Only once since official records began in 1923 has the tide been higher, reaching 1.94 meters in 1966. St Mark’s square, which is the lowest part of the city, it was one of the worse parts hit by the storm. The city of Venice is made up of more than 100 islands inside a lagoon off the north-east coast of Italy. Two people died on the island of Pellestrina, a thin strip of land that separates the lagoon from the Adriatic Sea. A man was electrocuted as he tri

Current Event #6 "Climate change is causing more extreme storms in Maine. Here’s how."

Climate change is causing more extreme storms in Maine. Here’s how. High winds knocked out power, downed trees and shut down schools late last month in the second extreme storm of the season. A few weeks before that, a nor’ easter brought torrential rain and wind speeds up to 73 mph to coastal communities. The loss of Arctic sea ice and warming ocean temperatures is fueling extreme storms in Maine. “There’s nearly 50 percent less sea ice cover in the Arctic basin now than there was 20 years ago,” Birkel said. “The loss of Arctic sea ice has changed the circulation pattern of large-scale winds.” Since Maine has seen warmer fall temperatures it can lead to more frequent storms. Birkel and his team are working on detailed statistical analyses of storms to determine if and how the frequency has changed. Some of my questions, thoughts, and opinions are how are people going to try to fix this global warming crisis? What are the things causing this? Are we ever going to be able
